532R - Contracts

  1. Period of Employment   

    1. Contracts and assignments shall be periods of 180 to 245 days depending on the specific position. Some assignment periods include paid annual leave. The assignment period for each employee will be specified in an assignment letter issued annually, when changing jobs, or when first employed by the school division. 
       
    2. Unless otherwise specified, all full-time and part-time employees may elect to utilize payroll deductions for all voluntary deductions provided through FCPS.

  2. Continuing Contracts 

    1. Only persons regularly employed full time in positions requiring a license by the school board as teachers, assistant principals, principals, or supervisors shall be eligible for a continuing contract.
       
    2. A probationary term of service of three years, with the option of two additional years in Frederick County Public Schools is required before a teacher is issued a continuing contract. 
        
    3. Teaching service outside of the Virginia public school system shall not be counted as meeting in whole or in part the required probationary term.
       
    4. Continuing contracts may be executed on behalf of persons holding a postgraduate, collegiate professional or technical professional license.
       
    5. If a teacher separates from service and does not return to teaching in the school division for a period longer than two years, such person shall be required to begin a new probationary period.
       
    6. A teacher who has achieved continuing contract status in another Virginia school division will be required to serve a two-year probationary period.

    7. Principals, assistant principals, and supervisors promoted to a higher position within the school division or employed from another school division will be required to serve a three-year probationary period before attaining continuing contract status in that position.

  3. Executive Employees 

    The school board may negotiate terms of employment, compensation, benefits, and severance with executive employees. Executive employees are defined as the superintendent and assistant superintendents. The superintendent may negotiate the terms of employment, compensation, benefits, and severance of the assistant superintendents, subject to approval by the board.
