306R - Curriculum in the Middle School

Philosophy

We believe that the middle school (grades 6, 7, and 8 in Frederick County) should be designed to meet the unique needs of young adolescents.  It should also provide a program that will enable youngsters to make a successful transition from the elementary school to the high school. 

Individuals differ widely in abilities as well as backgrounds, and the instructional program of the middle school should provide each student the opportunity to receive instruction at his/her own level of ability.  Accelerated programs, remedial and alternative programs, and challenging activities for all students should be an integral part of the middle school program.  The opportunity for success for all students should be an important goal. 

A variety of educational experiences, both academic and extracurricular, should be made available to stimulate interest in learning and provide for the social needs of the students.  Basic skills should be stressed and balanced by other activities that broaden the educational experiences of middle school youngsters.  Physical activities should be a vital part of the school program in the form of regular physical education and intramural activities.  Interdisciplinary teaming is an integral part of the middle school organization.  The team will be responsible for the core-curriculum offerings. 

The school and community need to work jointly to provide the best possible education for all students in order for the middle school program to be successful.
